Gila River Festival
Scheduled for May, 2006
Where is it?

The Gila River Festival occurs in May at a variety of locations in the Cliff-Gila Valley and in Silver City.

The Gila Conservation Coalition and partnering organizations present the Annual Gila River Festival in mid May. This family and educational event is a regional celebration showcasing the Gila River in New Mexico and its surrounding watershed.

“Our goal is to have fun and to provide an opportunity to experience and understand one of the last free-flowing rivers remaining in the Southwest,” stated Allyson Siwik, Executive Director of the Gila Conservation Coalition.

The Gila River Festival takes place in the Cliff-Gila Valley and Silver City and includes a variety of outdoor and indoor events that illustrate the many uses of the river and its surrounding habitat, as well as the rich cultural history of the area. Numerous groups work with the GCC, including the Upper Gila Watershed Alliance, Gila Resources Information Project, Gila Native Plant Society, Gila Conservation Education Center and Southwest New Mexico Audubon Society, to organize this multi-disciplinary, educational festival.

“The Gila River is the inspiration for bringing the arts and sciences together in an interdisciplinary fashion so that we can understand the river from a diversity of perspectives,” explained Nanda Currant, festival organizer and board member of the Upper Gila Watershed Alliance.
